Know what you want to do.
If you know what you want done, you can write or paint your idea. If you don’t have your project strategy you may have some difficulties explaining it to the contractor.
Find at least three experienced, reputable contractors who are capable of doing the work.
This may sound easier than it is. It is best to rely on personal referrals from people. You can search on internet sites for experienced and reputable contractor. There are few sites that can be visited.
Obtain few written estimates.
Contractor’s quotes can vary as much as 300% on any given job. This can be avoided by following Step 1 carefully.
Get some references from contractors.
Better than references can be a list of the recent clients that the contractor has worked with.
Choose the contractor.
Don't base your choice only on price. Look very carefully at what has been included in the contract. Analyze information that you have about each contractor. Think about the reputation, the time lines, the quality and etc.
Sign a contract.
The contract should include a complete description of the work, time lines, the prices and the materials. The contract should have a reasonable start date and a completion date. The contract must also contain a payment schedule and information about building schedule. Don't expect much guarantees if you are asking a contractor for something very small and easy.
Expect delays.
Any type of home repair may take longer than was first predicted. Be patient and reasonable.
Have some additional funds.
Many home repairs end up unearthing something else that requires repair.
