Cheap Energy Saving Ideas

January 31, 2010

May be the most important for energy saving is to be sure that your home is insulated properly. Sealing ductwork tightly and sealing the building envelope properly will result in using less energy to heat/cool the home.

Install foam gaskets around all outlets on exterior walls. Wait for foam to dry before putting it back together. Then use caulk to seal the edge of the outlet box to drywall. According to government sources, you can save about two more percents of the used energy.

For about $15 you can buy Dryer Vent Draft Blocker from plumbing department at your local store. There is a little flap on it that opens in only one direction. Then when the vent is on, the air is blowing outside, but the flap blocks cold air from the outside.

You can install exterior solar screens or shades on the south windows of your home. This will prevent much of the interior excessive heat buildup in the summer season.

Change your incandescent light bulb with energy saving bulbs. You will probably find CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) or LED lighting bulbs in every local store and they are cheap too.

Plastic Window Insulation can be very useful. Cheap and easy to install shrink film can keep your heat from flying out the window this winter. Window insulation kits are typically in stock at home supply and hardware stores, and, for less than ten dollars, you can usually get a kit that will insulate five standard size windows or at least one extra large window.

Another simple green solution is to wrap a storage water heater with an insulation jacket or blanket, which can reduce heat losses by 25 to 45 percent. This also means a monthly savings in energy bills.

If you have some electrical skills, you can make a single switch that shuts off every phantom electric item in the house with one flick. Things like coffee makers, cell phone chargers, DVD players and etc. Those things are always on, even when they are off.

We will be very happy if you share your energy saving ideas with us. You can post a comment about your experience.
