How to Unclog a Toilet

February 5, 2010

If your plumbing is old, clogged toilet can be a very common house problem. Fortunately, this problem can be solved very fast and easy. Before you can start unclogging your porcelain toilet, you will need some tools - plunger and closet auger for stubborn clogs.

There are two types of plungers. In your home, you probably have cup plunger, but it is not designed for toilets. It works best when used on flat surface. The second type of plungers is flange plunger or also called toilet plunger. These plungers have specially shaped bottom needed to seal the opening in the bottom of a toilet bowl and to maintain the required vacuum.

Now when you have the required tools you can try to unclog your toilet. Gently push the plunger through the water allowing air to escape from the plunger body. Once the plunger is sealed around the drain outlet in the bottom of the bowl, plunge up and down rapidly until the clog is broken and the water level seems to drop.

After this procedure, it is time to test if the toilet is draining. It is not a good idea to flush the toilet because the clog can still be there. You can use prepared in advance bucket or bottle filled with water. If water goes down the easily, the clog is cleared. If not, then you will have to try to unclog it with the plunger few more time.

If your attempts to clear the clog fail, then you will probably have to use the closet auger. The curved end of the auger handle pipe has to face the direction of the toilet's drain. Leave about 5 inches of cable between the drain hole and the end of the curved handle pipe, and then tighten the setscrew. Than you have to push the flexible cable into the drain and crank the auger until it stops. If you feel the auger is grabbed something, pull it out to check. If it stuck, you can push and pull the tube.

After breaking up the clog use the plunger again to make sure the obstruction is cleared. If you still cannot clear the clog, better call a plumbing contractor.
