How to Preserve Latex Paint Longer

July 15, 2011

Latex paint has many uses. Homeowners prefer it its ease of use and can be cleaned up with water. After the home project is finished, there is usually paint left over. It is recommended to keep it if you need extra paint for patches and touch ups. There comes the question how much the latex paint will last. If the container is not opened, the paint can last more than three years. However, several factors define how long the latex will last in the can after it has been opened.

Latex paints can last two years after it has been opened. However, you can prolong this period if the container is well sealed. It is important to keep air from reaching the latex paint. Air will cause your paint to start drying from the top down until it becomes completely solid. It is very important to avoid extreme temperatures and keep containers away from moisture and rust.

Paint will also last longer if you store it in a room that does not get colder than ten degrees Celsius. It is recommended if the paint does not freeze. Although it can go through a freezing and thawing cycle a few times before it can no longer be used. If the paint is frozen too long, it will become thick, lumpy and it will stop mix well.

It is very important to keep the lids of the paint container as clean as possiblebecause will seal tightly with clean lids. If the latex cans are not properly closed, they will expose the paint to air.
